Architecture for Humanity broaden SEDYEA by Football for Hope Centre

By Keeletsang Dipheko

In an effort to lend time to and expertise to bring design, construction and development services to those who would not otherwise be able to afford them, Architecture for Humanity has extended its hand to South East District Youth Empowerment Association (SEDYEA) by constructing a Football for Hope Center in Ramotswa.

“In Ramotswa we are building Football for Hope Center for a local organization SEDYEA,” said the Elisa Engel when introducing the project overview construction.

Speaking during the ground breaking at Ramotswa yesterday, Elisa said the new facility will enable SEDYEA to extend their services to provide a wider range of activities, including such diverse areas like workshops, aerobics training, homework supervision and computer courses. “The new facility will benefit some 1000 young people.”

Architecture for Humanity is currently working with FIFA and streetfootballworld on the Football for Hope program, which forms the 2010 FIFA World Cup Legacy. Football for Hope is strategic alliance between FIFA and streetfootballworld to increase the impact of football as a tool for social development, peace and social change.

According to Elisa the construction of the center will be done in four months. On the other hand several organizations have donated their services and  material needed for the project.

Giving his remarks Mr. Tshekiso Sorinyane, said they have unrest as Ramotswa residents of none completion of projects

“We have teacher’s houses which was build since 2006 until now they are not yet finished. The road from Ramotswa to Gaborone should have been completed May this year to date the road is still not complete.”

However he urged the contractors not to follow the same route to redeem the hope of residents for on time completion of the center.

Kitso Masi the director of SEDYEA said the center opened five years ago for children in an effort to fight HIV/AIDS as South East was among the most affected especially young people. He said the Football for Hope Centre is one of the most welcome projects as it will provide extra activities such as sports to mould young boys and children.

Since its inception SEDYEA has proven that they have skills and motivation to work efficiently. In addition as part of the Football for Hope program, they are receiving organizational support from streetfootballworld to ensure the on going success of the project. SEDYEA also generates an independent income stream through a vegetable planting and catering project, run entirely by the young people who use the center.

Gropius House

gropius3

The home Walter Gropius built for his family soon after moving from to the US from Germany had a dramatic impact on American architecture. Its detailing keeps strongly to the principles of the Bauhaus, which Gropius had founded and directed in Germany, exploiting simple, well-designed but mass-produced fittings for steel wall lights, chromed banisters etc., as well as in the structure of the house (glass block walls complementing the wooden frame and New England clapboarding).

Boidus Quotes-’what they say..’

“Badly designed buildings can crush the spirits of those who live and work in them and, in the case of those that are supposed to have a social purpose, actually defeat the object of the building itself,”
